New Brighton Baptist's Walk4Water

On June 28thNew Brighton Baptist Church held a Walk4Water. About 50 people took part including some young people from Rossendale who were visiting us for the weekend. We walked the short distance from the church to the model boating lake carrying empty containers and having filled them at the lake, carried the full containers back to the church. This walk of about 4 miles represents the average distance that many people in the developing world (mostly women and children) have to walk every day to get water - usually in blazing sun and on an empty stomach, not on a cool day after breakfast! The water is often dirty and full of disease causing organisms (would you drink the water from the boating lake? We didn't!).

The Walk4Water challenge is part of the Turn on the Tap (TOTT) campaign launched by Samaritan's Purse International (SPI; better known as the "Shoebox Charity") which aims to provide safe clean water for people in the developing world. We each paid £2; other money was raised through sponsorship, and people collecting small change in empty water bottles. So far we have raised about £350 (money is still trickling in). This could be used buy 8 BioSand water filters (£40 each), each of which will provide clean, disease free water for a family for up to 25 years.

If you would like to know more about TOTT or the other work done by SPI, please go to the website http://www.turnonthetap.org/.

THE FRIENDS OF THE TOWER GROUNDS

As everyone knows, the Tower Grounds has been left in an appalling state by United Utilities after the major works. We were assured by UU that the area would be put back how it was and the phrase used was "You'll never know we've been there..." The Tower Grounds now resemble a derelict, weed-ridden field. It has not been put back to the required standard and not a day goes by without me badgering the Council to put pressure on United Utilities to start the correction work. After a recent site visit, they agreed that the area needs hand-weeding, stone picking and a weekly treatment of a weedkiller. This still hasn't happened! Yesterday an email was sent to UU from the Council stating that work must now start without further delay.
Mini-motos and motorbikes are still a problem and the local Police are aware of the issue.

Sue Taylor. Vice Chair. Friends of the Tower Grounds.

Mersey Basin Week 2008

Thiswill run from Friday 3rdOctober until Sunday 12thOctober. New Brighton Community Partnership will be organizing a guided walk from New Brighton Station to Vale Park on Sunday 5thOctober to look at the historical aspects of that part of New Brighton and it's waterfront The walk will end at Vale House Café where tea and scones will be provided.

On Sunday 12thOctober a guided walk will take place from Seacombe Ferry to Vale Park. Transport will be provided to Seacombe. Those on the walk will look at the Art and Architecture of the waterfront as well as learning something of its history.

The walk will be followed by a light lunch at Vale House Cafe and a concert of Sea Shanties on the Bandstand.

The first reserved matters application for the New Brighton Waterfront Regeneration Phase II development was given unanimous approval (12 votes in favour, none against) by Wirral Council's Planning Committee on 21stAugust 2008.

This is the first reserved matters application following the grant of outline planning permission (Ref: OUT/2007/6508) for a mixed use regeneration scheme incorporating commercial, leisure and tourism facilities, a hotel, retail store, food and drink establishments, the upgrading of the public realm and marine lake, ancillary facilities and associated infrastructure.

The first reserved matters application delivers the following key benefits as part of the New Brighton Waterfront Regeneration Phase II:

  1. Upgrading of the public realm

  2. Improved flood defences through the introduction of a Wave Overtopping Containment Wall

  3. A new Model Boating Lake

  4. New car parking for Model Boating Lake users and general public, with a much higher level of provision than initially proposed in illustrative plans submitted with the outline application

  5. High quality Seafront Promenade with new hard and soft landscaping works

  6. Improved access to and from Seafront Promenade

  7. A new RNLI access to slipway

  8. Improved lighting and seating arrangements throughout the RMA 1 site area

  9. Improved drainage system for site area to the west of the proposed new Health and Fitness facility

  10. The provision of a bus layover facility within easy reach of the proposed new Model Boating Lake and Health and Fitness facilities.

This application follows on from the Floral Pavilion Theatre and continues Neptune Developments' involvement in the regeneration of New Brighton's Waterfront Area. Neptune is currently in the process of finalising the designs of the new commercial, leisure and retail elements of the proposal and will be consulting the general public on their proposed designs in the near future.

ST PETER AND PAUL'S AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH

Now that SS. Peter and Paul's Church has closed, Holy Mass is being celebrated at All Saints Church, Hoseside Road at 6 pm on Saturday evening and 9.45 am on Sunday morning. Weekday masses are also celebrated on Mondays and Thursdays - subject always to Fr Feeney being available - he is still serving three parishes and funerals unfortunately occur quite frequently and upset the schedule.

The Union of Catholic Mothers is continuing to hold its weekly meeting at 2 pm on Wednesday afternoon, with the first meeting at All saints being on September 10th.

The SVP in New Brighton now meets at All Saints each Monday at 2 pm. Ring the President, Moira Gallagher, on 639 1478 for more information..

Both Societies extend a warm welcome to new members who may find the new location more convenient.

Finally, our sincerest thanks to the flock at All Saints who have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome, altering their own Service times so that we may all fit in comfortably.

Long may this Christian cooperation and goodwill continue and may God bless us all.

Love to Knit? No-one to knit for.

Why not make mittens, a scarf or a beanie hat or even a hand puppet to put a smile on a child's face? You could use our specially made pattern for hand puppets. The clowns were so popular last winter that we hope to have many more knitted puppets in shoe boxes this year. Playing with a glove puppet has been found to be very therapeutic for a child suffering from trauma or isolation - the puppet becomes a little friend to talk to.

Love to Sew? No-one to sew for.You could make pencil bags, sewing kits, small and large bags (every girl needs one!), juggler's bean bags and many other items

Patterns available from http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/pages/knitting-operation-christmas-childor leave your name and number at Vale House Café and I will contact you.
