Tower Action Group

A mix of bad and good news this time.

On the 9th March we were back again at the Town Hall to put our case, and hear the decision on the application by Orange PLC to fit 2 x new 600mm microwave dishes on the tower. We lost because the Planning Committee disagreed with our case that 3 of the existing 5 dishes should have been removed 28 days after they became redundant many months ago. If they had been removed in line with the original imposed conditions, then the new application would be to actually increase the number of dishes from 2 to 4. Our further case that the new dishes should not be allowed because the same effect of "line of sight" communication could be achieved using land-lines was largely ignored. We remain uncertain as to how much the decision was influenced by one of the committee shouting "if you think this looks bad (the tower) then you should see the one that is behind my house". The vote to approve the 2 extra microwave dishes was unanimous.

Good news. On 23rd March the decision was taken by the Inspector from the DETR in Bristol to dismiss both applications by Hutchison 3G UK to remove 5 of the original windows from this Grade 2* Listed building, and to replace them with plastic (GRP) imitations so that 3 x antennae and 2 x microwave dishes could be "hidden" behind the plastic glass which would allow the microwave radiation through unhindered. The Inspector made reference to the fact that not only would the new windows be highly noticable but also the new antennae and dishes would be seen, and that it would not be right to use the poor maintenance by United Utilities of the existing glazing in the tower as a reason to make further variation in the overall visual appearance of the structure. The Inspector also stated that "As the third party representations suggest, the continuing additions are beginning to change the character of the entire building from one of a water tower to that of a telecommunications tower. I agree that it is a 'step too far'".

The full decision is available on the "Tower Action Group" website at www.emit.demon.co.uk/tag. If you do not have access to a computer, a copy of the report may be obtained through the "New Brighton Community Partnership".

THE PROPOSED NEPTUNE DEVELOPMENT

The plans are now with the Planning Department and a decision should be made by the Planning Committee some time in June. The plans will then go to Government Office for the decision to be ratified - or not.

Whether you are FOR the Development or AGAINST it your views are important. Please write and let the Planning Committee know what YOU think. Write to -The Head of Planning Services, Wirral Borough Council, Town Hall, Wallasey.

8 YEARS OF THE NEW BRIGHTON WALRUS

This edition of the Walrus is the 32nd We have been printing and delivering it to you for 8 years! We hope that you find it useful. Many thanks to all those volunteers who have given time to deliver it. We need more volunteers. Could you spare half and hour 4 times a year to deliver some? Would you like to advertise in the Walrus? Please get in touch if you would like to do either. 639 5798 We'd be very pleased to hear from you.

Merseyfest on the Wirral

Let me introduce you to Merseyfest. Merseyfest is a church based organisation that is putting together a series of community projects and festivals which are both sustainable and impact directly on the community. (Currently over 175 such projects have been accepted from the Wirral to Southport, St Helens and beyond) So what does that mean to me I hear you ask? We are currently directly involved with 4 community projects in the Wallasey area as well as two exciting evening events. 1. Painting the 'Place in the park' a community hall situated in central park. 2. Painting park equipment in a number of local parks. 3. Environmental clearing in a number of locations. 4. Gardening for the elderly and delivering vital safety leaflets about doorstep crime. A festival to be held in Vale Park on Friday 19th August and a free 3 course meal for the elderly to take place the week of 16th-19th August. In Wallasey village. But that's not all. Merseyfest is taking over Croxteth Park in Liverpool where approximately 4000 delegates from all around the world will be camped in order carry out the projects and host all the events. All of this is to take place between the 14th and 21st August. You can help us to make this a very memorable time. Do you know any where in your neighbour hood that would benefit from clearing and cleaning? Do you know any one over the age of 55 that would like a free meal with music and entertainment? Do you know someone who is elderly and is unable to clear their garden? Is your local park looking a little bit untidy? If you can answer yes to any of these then we would like to hear from you. You can pass on any information to Mel on 0151 638 8818 or the Merseyfest office on 0151 282 8054 alternatively you could even call the publishers of this magazine mentioned on the front cover. Also if you're a part of a local church and would like to be directly involved with Merseyfest as a delegate where we will guarantee you a great week of entertainment fun and some hard work then why not sign up and join us. Please call the Merseyfest office above to begin this exciting adventure. Let August 2005 be the time we all make an impact on the lives of those around us and make a difference to the place we live! Have a great summer with Merseyfest on the Wirral.
