Xena's Return.

Photo of kestrelSome of you may have noticed some posters in the Seabank Road area recently asking for sightings of a lost kestrel. Xena is a wild rescued female kestrel that I have had in my care for just on twelve months. She was originally rescued in Derbyshire some years ago, she had a similar background to the kestrel in the book and film called Kes. Some young boys had taken her illegally from the wild and they trained the young bird to fly to the fist for food, they didn't mistreat her but did loose her by flying her at too high a weight when she wasn't particularly hungry.

She was found in a supermarket car park (Morrison's!) in good condition but hungry, on examination she was found to be perfectly healthy but had no fear of humans, what is known as a mal-imprint and she was deemed not suitable for release. She was given a home by a member of Raptor Rescue and would often attend fund raising events on behalf of the charity. Raptor Rescue is a National charity whose aim is to take care of sick or injured birds of prey by suitably qualified persons and whenever possible return them back to the wild, Unfortunately our charity member had a change of personal circumstances and had to give up his valuable work and re-home his own birds of prey and quite a few rescue birds.

I already had three captive bred owls of my own all of which I had hand reared, I was asked if I could possibly find room for any more! A quick phone call to the wife (who was away for the weekend) and it was agreed that the rockery and last remaining corner of the garden would have to go, making space for two aviaries, one for Xena and the other for a 13 year old captive bred Tawny Owl! On the 17th March while I was about to feed her Xena escaped. I was concerned because, although she was at a high weight and not being particularly hungry, with her lack of fear with humans anything could happen to her. I informed all the local and national authorities and some posters were placed in local shops. I had quite a good response with some very accurate sightings in the first few days, I went out locally on a number of occasions with a supply of food so that if I did see her I could tempt her back to safety. On the 24th March I received a mobile phone call from a lady who was reading one of my posters in The New Orient Chinese take-away on Seabank Road. She told me that she worked for a skip hire company in central Birkenhead and that a very tame kestrel had been flying to people who worked there for scraps of burger and bacon butties! The previous day one of their regular customers arrived in the yard and this kestrel had flown down and landed on his head! He caught her up and put her in a box to take home and look after her. After a few phone calls I was able to track down this chap and soon established that the kestrel was in fact Xena! On Saturday 25th March Xena was safely returned to her aviary where she quite happily tucked in to her usual feed. She was perfectly ok not even a broken feather although she had lost a fair amount of weight, I think that although burgers and bacon are certainly not the correct food for a kestrel they had kept her alive long enough. I spent that afternoon building the safety door that would have prevented all this drama!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who displayed the posters and especially those who took the time to contact me with sightings.

I will be attending the New Brighton Carnival on 20th & 21st May on behalf of Raptor Rescue along with Xena and my other birds. If you want to meet her please call at our display stand for a chat.

MOGGIES IN NEED was established in 1999. Our aim is to help animals, mainly cats, that are sick, injured, unwanted or just plainly dumped. At any one time we have at least 40 cats in our care. We work extremely hard to raise funds to pay for their food and veterinary bills. The work we do often means we are out late at night on demolition sites with cat traps trying to catch cats and kittens that people have left behind when they moved out. This work can be dangerous as there are often used syringes broken glass and floor boards ripped up - not to mention the mounds of rubble and bricks.

Negotiating all this with just a torch is not easy whilst carrying a heavy trap. We are always grateful for donations of money, food, toys, bedding etc. Also items we can sell to raise funds.

If you would like any more info on us then call Annie - 652 6977 - or Glenys - 638 4211 - or come and see us at new Brighton Carnival on 20th/21st May.

We will be very pleased to see you at our stall - MOGGIES IN NEED in association with Animal Welfare.

PARKGATE PONY SANCTUARY

The Bamford family established the Pony Sanctuary in 1984. The Sanctuary was then named "Badger's Memorial Pony Sanctuary" after their much loved first rescue pony Badger.

Since 1984 the Sanctuary has grown steadily and currently has responsibility for the care of many Horses and Ponies. It still remains a family run Sanctuary, aided by a group of friends and much-needed volunteers.

In 1997 a plot of land in Parkgate was donated by a sponsor, which has now become the main base for people to come and meet our Ponies. In November 1998 the Sanctuary changed its name to "The Parkgate Pony Sanctuary".

The Sanctuary continues to exist purely through financial support from the public through sponsorships, donations, fund-raising events and time given by volunteers.

Please come along and meet our fundraisers at the New Brighton Carnival. "Dandy" the Shetland Pony will be making appearances over the weekend. Come along and feed him some carrots - you'll have a new friend!!

ST JAMES with EMMANUEL constitutes the Church of England's presence within the Parish of New Brighton.
Both new and old architectural styles are represented.

EMMANUEL is a modern recently constructed churchbuilding situated on Seabank Road whilst ST JAMES is an inspiring traditional "Steeple" church building situated on Albion Street.

Strengthened through the bonding of the two churches, the Parish provides a welcoming Christian community providing spiritual nourishment for worshippers, as well as acting as a focal point for many youth organisations and activity groups.

ST JAMES with EMMANUEL offers both "young" through "not so young" respite from a seemingly material world and a chance to discover life's true values.
The Vicar and Church wardens from the Parish of New Brighton extend a warm
invitation for you to come along and join us for worship, or to enquire further.

If you receive one of these cards contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072 239 6655 or your local Trading Standards Office.

Romanian Juggernaut appeal

Dear Friends,

This is the first chance I have had to write an article for the Walrus so I must apologise for our absence from previous editions. The year has been hectic as usual and I'm very pleased to report that our usual prospects are going strong and that we have a NEW venture this year. We have been told that a church which provides a soup kitchen for the homeless would like our help. Already we have packed 9 boxes of cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils along with 6 buckets of pasta.

Some of you already know that we collect PASTA to distribute between the 5 institutions we support. Now we have been asked to help out at the soup kitchen we will need more than ever. Why pasta? you may ask. Well, it's got a really long life date, it doesn't need special storage facilities, it will make either savoury or sweet meals and, best of all, it's not expensive.

We have Irby Primary School collecting pasta for us, but it looks like we are going to need far more than last year. We sent out 80 buckets of pasta last October split between the hospital, orphanage, the Roma centre, a special needs centre and a farm out at Tatoramiresti.

If you would like to donate PASTA you may drop it off at VALE HOUSE CAFE in VALE PARK. So I can collect it, pack it and put it on the manifest ready for the trip which is in September this year.

You could also bring it along to NEW BRIGHTON CARNIVAL where we will be holding our very successful Lollipop Lucky Dip as usual.

We need ll sort of donations -TOILETERIES, PASTA, SCHOOL MATERIALS along with the constant request for bedding, clothes and toys.

If you would like to help in any way, contact JENNY REID on 0151 922 2121 AFTER 9.30 pm as I don't get in from work till then.

Many thanks to everyone for your past support.

FREE CARNIVAL BUS

As usual there will be a bus to take people to the Carnival - and bring them back - FREE. The bus will take part in the Parade and then will tour New Brighton picking people up who want to go.

It's hard to give exact times but we will ask the driver to be on Seabank Road by Emmanuel Church at 12.30 and then at half past each hour, by the traffic lights at twenty to and outside the station at quarter to.

Use Of '999' System

Merseyside police is committed to providing an excellent service to the various and diverse communities within the Merseyside area.

With the advent of new technology e.g. mobile phones and e-mail demands on the police is ever growing and therefore 'we', the police service, have to prioritise our demands from the public.

'999' calls can be made when: -

  • there is a direct and immediate threat to life / limb or to property.

  • prompt attendance is required to catch suspects in the act of committing a crime or have just committed the crime and are in the vicinity.

It is NOT to be used for general nuisance e.g. people playing football in the street or abandoned cars or to report a crime which has been committed over a period of time, whether it has been witnessed or not. Please do not use the '999' system.

To report NON-URGENT incidents Merseyside Police can be contacted on 0151 777 2080 or via e-mail through the force web site www.merseysidepolice.gov.uk

If the '999' system is used correctly then the police will be able to direct our resources accordingly.

Misuse of the system may also result in the loss of life to someone who genuinely needs police assistance.
